About me

At the end of his undergraduate studies, Mitch joined the Royal Australian Navy. After returning from his full-time service, Mitch commenced practicing with the in-house legal team of an ASX listed company, working in employment, WHS and insurance. 

Since joining the Bar, Mitch has acted for a wide range of clients including banks, insurance companies, property managers, proprietary companies and individuals.  His practice centres around general litigation (contractual and equity), employment/industrial law, insurance and administrative law.  Mitch has a particular interest in statutory prosecutions, especially Work Health and Safety matters. 

Mitch holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the Queensland University of Technology and a Masters of Laws from the Australian National University. 

Mitch has a professional interest in legal education, and teaches evidence and administrative law at Queensland University of Technology.

employment and industrial 

From unfair dismissals to right of entry disputes, advocacy in the Fair Work Commission and Queensland Industrial Relations Commission requires swift and professional advice. In his practice, Mitch has represented ASX listed companies, proprietary companies and individuals in all stages of employment disputes. 


discrimination

Discrimination is a complex area of law, and it will often require experience to navigate the wide variety of obligations and rights of all parties. Recognising the sensitive nature of these conflicts, it is best to engage an experienced advisor from the beginning. In both the Commonwealth and Queensland jurisdictions, Mitch has provided advice and advocacy in discrimination disputes for a number of years with has a sound understanding of the delicate balance between people, and commercial outcomes.


statutory prosecutions and inquiries

From disciplinary hearings to coronial inquests, often professional reputations, businesses or livelihoods depend on the outcome of a statutory prosecutions. From his time as an advocate in the Defence Force, to his role with a large corporate insurer, Mitch is an experienced advocate on both sides of regulatory matters and is able to provide professional advice to these disputes.

Injury or incidents in the workplace will often occur without warning. When it does, the client always needs experienced advice as soon as possible. From the practical experience received from the Navy and an ASX-listed company to post-graduate studies in WHS law, Mitch combines advocacy and experience in all kinds of WHS disputes to help his clients achieve the best outcomes.


insurance and workers' compensation

Mitch has experienced the management of personal injury and professional liability claims from both the plaintiff and the defendant perspective. Since commencing his practice, he has been briefed in personal injury matters, providing expert advocacy from conference to trial, particularly under PIPA and MAIA.

Mitch also accepts briefs in almost all areas of general litigation. From Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal to the Federal Court, Mitch is able to assist with advice and advocacy. 

 

workplace investigations

After experiencing the difficulties of responding to difficult workplace disputes, Mitch appreciates the benefit of an impartial and discrete investigator for employment issues. Engaging a third-party investigator early, often reduces the overall cost to the business of a protracted dispute. Mitch is intimately aware of the requirements of impartial investigations, and is able to respond to an investigation quickly to allow the client to get on with business.
